Herpes lips : Coping With a Cold Sore

Herpes lips : As a social worker I see people who complain about various physical issues. The cold sore embarrassment is mentioned a lot by those who suffer from a cold sore on the lip. When I speak to students they often mention not showing up to classes, cancelling dates and avoiding friends till the eruption heals. When I see professionals, they speak about trying to postpone meetings and presentations, cancel luncheons and avoid people at work.

Though it is only a sore on one’s lip, a cold sore creates a lot of inner tension and embarrassment. Remember it is just your lip, and it is your personality that shines through. You can grow a lot by not giving in to the urge to cancel situations and hide out during the active phase of the cold sore eruption.

It helps to have perspective and be grateful you aren’t in a life threatening situation or have a terminal illness. The cold sore will pass and people will admire you if they see you dealing with it with grace and equanimity. How we deal with adverse conditions is something people notice about us and to have an inner calm versus a sense of shame and hiding will show something deep about your character.

Yes, people judge others by their appearance, but we also sense a depth in someone when they are able to overcome challenges and not be obsessed about their appearance or others’ opinions of them. Try to remember this while you deal with your cold sore healing.

Of course, having a good plan and system to shorten and eliminate the cold sore is important as well since it is a virus that can recur. Do both: Work on your inner self but also take steps to improve your immune system and shorten the cold sore pimple cycle.
